How are answers grounded, and what do the citation chips mean?

Before answering, we search the Summa Theologiae for the passages that bear on your question, and the AI may answer only from those passages. Each chip, like “ST I, q. 2, a. 3, co.”, points to the part, question, article, and section a sentence comes from — click it to read the full article. After each answer we check the citations automatically: citations that don’t match a retrieved passage are removed, and quotations are compared word for word with the text. The line under the answer shows the result. It is an AI speaking in Aquinas’s voice, not Thomas Aquinas himself, and it can still get things wrong, so read the article before you rely on an answer.

Why does it sometimes say “In the Summa I do not treat this directly”?

It says this when none of the retrieved passages address your question. Rather than make something up, it tells you so. Try asking in terms Aquinas would use — for example, about law, virtue, the soul, or God’s existence — or ask about a topic the Summa covers.

Which translation is used, and what is the Supplement?

We use the 1920 English translation by the Fathers of the English Dominican Province, which is in the public domain, taken from the Christian Classics Ethereal Library (CCEL). The Supplement completes the Third Part, which Aquinas left unfinished. It was compiled after his death, mostly from his earlier writings, so passages from it are labelled as Supplement.

How many questions can I ask, and when does the allowance reset?

Asking questions is free, with a daily allowance per account so the service stays free for everyone. The chat shows roughly how many questions you have left today. The allowance resets at 00:00 UTC. There is also a daily limit for the whole service, so on a very busy day questions may pause until the reset.

Are my conversations saved?

Not at the moment. Your conversation stays in your browser tab and is gone when you close or reload it. For quality and abuse monitoring, our server logs each question with your account ID (not your name or email) — see the Privacy Policy for what is logged. Email us if you want your account deleted.
